Sexualisierung & Selbstbestimmung at PARALLEL Vienna 2021

Exhibiting at PARALLEL 2021, Julia Bugram's project Sexualisierung und Selbstbestimmung, or “Sexualization & Self-Determination”, critically analyzes the complex themes encompassed in the title through a broad range of mediums and subjects. Combined with works by Gloria Dimmel, the theme of the constant confrontation of self-image and social idealization of the female body makes the relevance of their work unequivocal. Instead of perceiving the female body as an object, surrendering it to the voyeurism of the viewer or artist, their respective artistic practices reclaim the body, impeding the appropriation and objectification imminent within today’s society.

Bugram does this with her works in the form of diptychs, referencing and recontextualizing art historical notions of artistic production and allowing for the subject to take control. She continues her investigation of these themes through “It’s a Match and it’s going to be grand”, a series in which the artist playfully renders the idiosyncratic hand movement of swiping which is done on the dating app Tinder. For the graphic triptych "WUT - MUT - FUT", concise lettering on a softly colored Biedermeier wallpaper relates to the absconding of women from their own four walls, while also conveying the conservative traditions that enclose them. Her works come together to explore the themes of sexualization and self-determination through the variety of artworks and mediums exhibited.

Dimmel displays her “Vulvenabdrücke”, her plaster casts of various vulvas. These form an archive of the female body, displaying its unique characteristics while breaking down the taboo topic of female sexuality. Gloria usually makes plaster casts of vulvas in her private apartment in Vienna, however appointments are offered exclusively at Parallel in collaboration with C/20. This gives visitors with vulvas the chance to partake in the series and stimulate a self-determined confrontation with themselves and their own body.
